4.1.2 Publication density
The density indicator accounts for size of country in terms of population, where we then adjust the data to the number of publications per 1000 persons. This way we get a better indication of publication performance in comparison to the other EU countries.
In the figure on the right can be seen that the Nordic and Alpine countries are actually performing fairly well. Whereas, for the main European economies the situation is not as good as at the virtual start of nano-science and -technology drive in 1998. We see that both the UK and Germany fell back in productivity and that others remained stagnant.
