12.1 Analysing Nano-science Publications
This chapter addresses the analyses undertaken using publication data from the Database of Nanotechnology Scientific Publications as created by MERIT. It includes the methodologies prepared for the analyses, and the statistics and indicators drawn from the database. The main focus here is the sectoral analysis of the data.
Recognized bibliometric techniques are employed to visualize the current state of nanotechnology basic research in the EU 27 and Switzerland. Set theory mathematics are used to define 10 industrial sectors which are subsequently analysed. Through this further analysis deeper insights are gained into the sectoral characteristics of basic research in nanotechnology within the EU-27 and Switzerland.
Furthermore, we see that the EU apparently has been leading in all studied industries during 1998-2007, with the highest publication shares in all 10 sectors.
