6.8.3 Trends within the EU

Within the EU (plus Switzerland), Germany is the leading country with more than 600 publications between 1998 and 2007. It is followed by France, the UK, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands (fig 5). The same ranking is also observed in the year 2007 only. It seems that all countries are increasing their output evenly. The order of the countries is fairly constant over the 10 years. Opposite to the worldwide trend (where developing countries and countries in transition are significantly increasing their output) no such trend is observed within the EU. Only Romania and Slovakia showed an remarkable increase in publications in 2007. But it would be too early to talk about a trend.

Normalized to the number of inhabitants, Switzerland is the most productive country (fig 6). In Switzerland 1.9 papers on the TS Environment were published per 100'000 inhabitants followed by Belgium (1.2), Finland (1.2), Denmark (1.0), Sweden (1.0) and the Netherlands (1.0). By comparison: the U.S. published 0.6 papers per 100'000 inhabitants in the same timespan (Japan: 0.4, China: 0.1).

Figure 7 shows that most papers between 1998 and 2007 were published by the CSIC (Consejo superior de investigaciones cientificas, Spain) followed by the CNRS (Centre national de la recherche cientifique, France), the ETH (Switzerland), the CNR (Centro nazionale delle ricerche, Italy) and the Polish Acadamy of Science. The top institutes and universities are changing every year. Only five institutes were over three years (2005-2007) among the top 20: Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research, CNR, CNRS, CSIC and the Polish Acadamy of Science.
