reportFuel cells and Hydrogen Production and Storage
5.4.6.2 Hydrogen Production & Storage

Concerning R&D aspects, the dominant position is by the US because of great needs and therefore implication in transport. The will to reduce their dependence on fossil fuel force them to finance R&D research in alternative resources such as hydrogen. Their recent program dedicated 30% of the budget to hydrogen storage, 18% to hydrogen production and 36% to fuel cells.

The European hydrogen program is related to transport but also to other intermediate market (stand alone systems, spare generator, industrial vehicles) which do not especially require a size reduction. Europe seems to have a dominant position in the field of high temperature electrolysis.

Several European programs are still in development: NESSHY[i] partly funded by the 6th Framework Programme and dedicated to Hydrogen Storage in Solids and Roads2HyCom, a partnership of 29 stakeholder organisations supported by the European Commission 6th Framework Programme, which has studied technical and socio-economic issues associated with the use of Fuel Cells and Hydrogen in a sustainable energy economy
