4.9.1 Definition

The construction sector is a highly cost driven market being adverse to expensive innovations. However, the surge in energy costs has led to more energy efficient buildings. Regulation is another driver for a sustainable development of the construction sector. Buildings within the EU account for 42% of the total final energy consumption and are responsible for about 35% of all greenhouse emissions 1. Therefore an environmental friendly approach in the construction of highly energy efficient buildings will be crucial for a future development towards a sustainable construction. In this regard nanotechnology offers several pathways for a significant improvement in thermal isolation and a reduction of green house gas emission.
