4.3.1 Definition
Nanocoatings are either defined by their intrinsic functionality, e.g. by exploiting the properties of distinct nanoparticles which are embedded in a surrounding matrix or by their ultra-thin layer thickness. Nanomaterial or nanoparticles within a matrix are also named nanocomposites. A nanocomposite consists of at least one nanomaterial dispersed in a composite matrix. The layer thickness of a nanocoating is usually in the range of some 10 to 100 nanometres. However, many application require thicker coatings which do not fall into the nanometres regime.
