4.7.1 Definition

The traffic has increased steadily over the past decades. Funding for maintenance and repair of existing infrastructure has been often neglected even in most developed countries. Heavy traffic has led to deformation and fatigue cracking of the pavement. Besides traffic also freeze-thaw cycles and aggressive de-icing solutions play a role in the deterioration of the road surface.
In addition to road construction also bridges are a key element in today's infrastructure. Lighter and more durable bridges are under investigation.
