4.6.1 Definition

Fires are a constant threat to buildings. In Europe twelve people die in average every single day from fires and 120 are injured1. 80% of all deaths occur in residential buildings. The European Flame Retardants Association (EFRA) has estimated the economic loss to be about 25 Billion Euros per year. Safer material may reduce the number of severe fires and death toll. Also innovative materials increasing the living comfort such as antibacterial, scratch resistant and easy-to-clean surfaces are mentioned in the following.
